Professional development has become a defining priority for higher education institutions as they respond to the increasing adoption of English-Medium Instruction (EMI), English for Specific Purposes (ESP), and Integrating Content and Language in Higher Education (ICLHE). This edited volume offers a timely exploration of how educators can develop the knowledge, pedagogical expertise, digital competencies, and professional identities needed to thrive in these evolving educational contexts.
Bringing together contributions from scholars and practitioners across Algerian universities, the volume combines theoretical perspectives with practical experiences to examine key issues such as teacher identity, reflective practice, assessment, mentoring, artificial intelligence in language education, digital innovation, and institutional support for professional learning. Drawing on authentic experiences from the Algerian ICLHE professional development initiative alongside broader discussions of EMI and ESP teacher education, the chapters provide valuable insights into the opportunities and challenges of fostering meaningful and sustainable professional growth.
Beyond its scholarly contribution, the volume also serves as a lasting record of the professional learning journeys of participants selected for the ICLHE training initiative. It aims to preserve and disseminate their experiences, reflections, and pedagogical developments, ensuring that their engagement continues to inform and inspire future practices in EMI and ESP contexts.
By highlighting context-sensitive approaches to professional development, this book contributes to ongoing discussions on educational innovation and the internationalisation of higher education. It will be of interest to university instructors, teacher educators, researchers, educational leaders, policymakers, and graduate students seeking to strengthen professional development practices and advance quality teaching in EMI, ESP, and ICLHE settings.
